Introduction:

HEALS stands for Health, Education, Awareness and Legal Services. It is an initiative by a group of people mainly social workers that have worked in this field and area for many years in Non-governmental organizations and educational Institutions. It is an expression of the commitment to constructive participation in social change

I would like to introduce our Executive members as:

Mr.D.Kannaya as a chairman is a social worker since three years

Dr. J.K.Kalra is the Director cum executive secretary and has 8 years of experience, of which 5 years in the field of child and mother care project financed by Christian children fund as a Hon. Medical officer, as child and mother welfare coordinator and as a co-coordinator for Integrated Nutrition and Health Programmed of CARE- INDIA for one year.

Mr. Kuso pradhani has also 16 years of experience in the field of social work and has worked in CCF , CA and CARE- INHP projects in Rayagada District.

Mr. Arun Kumar as a treasurer/ member is also an experience staff in the field of social work and has worked in various organizations.

Mrs.K. Leeawati has 18 years of experience in the social field in various NGOs in different fields like health, development and PDS.

Mr. Chitraranjan Mohanty has also worked in different NGO and is computer-trained person from NITS. He is also working as part time computer teacher.

Mrs. Sonia is highly qualified social worker. She had worked in Christian school, college and many other schools as a senior science teacher and presently doing clinical research work.

Mr. Ram Prasad Patro, LLM , is a welknown advocate and is a social worker of the Rayagada district. He is also legal adviser and consultant of HEALS.

The organization HEALS is a non-profit voluntary organization founded specially to look to the rehabilitation of under privileged and undeveloped backward people of the rural areas. Our operational area is in the anterior rural locality and consequently the medical facilities for these poor people are practically nil. The people have to travel long distances for getting medical help and treatment in the hospital, which are far away and very costly, and beyond the financial reach of these poor people. This situation is prevailing in more than 70 % villages covered by Kolnara block. This situation made us to introduce measures in the field of medical and health care, awareness and health education.

It is experienced that during the rainy season the rural people of Kolnara block specially in the interior and inaccessible pocket are in an unimmagible distressed condition. Due to their illiteracy, ignorance, lack of sanitation, unpalatable and unsubstantial food, poverty and specially Superstition etc. the circumstances sometimes couple them to lead a dismissal life. It is also peculiar to say that in spite of their sufferings from fever and epidemical diseases, they never prefer to come to the hospital for treatment, which is for away due to poverty. But most of the time they take the help of sorcerers and village quacks and as a result fall a victim to death.

The area of Suri gram panchayat in Kolnara block of Rayagada district is near to the blockhead quarter but yet to come to limelight in all aspects of life. There are 17 villages in the Suri Panchayat and few villages, remains cut off during the rainy season. The poor economic condition of the people doesn’t give scope to send a large number of children to the school for education. Till date few villages have no primary school. Those who have some qualification prefer to serve the Govt while others prefer to leave the village for settlement elsewhere.

As regards, health services this area lacks good health services because many villages remain cut off from the block PHC during the rainy season.

Malaria, Diarrhea, TB, Anemia, skin diseases and malnutrition are prevalent in these villages.

Govt Health services of these areas are insufficient. Most of the services cannot reach beyond roadside villages/ market side villages, while rest remain unattended. Lack of interest and no proper orientation of the Govt. staff and lack of essential medical supplies are just common factors.

Women silently suffer from numerous health and psychosomatic problems related to pregnancies and childbirth. As they are ignorant, malnourished, over worked and bear large number of children due to marriage at an early age, their family as well as their own health is endangered. Tribal society depends heavily on the earnings of their women folk, she has to provide food for the entire family, and thus woman’s health is grossly neglected.

LEGAL STATUS:

HEALS started its work in the Suri GP from April-2005 and became formal organization in the same year by December 2005 by virtue of its registration under the Society Registration Act XXI of 1860. Now it is a fully registered organization bearing registration No.2052/23/05-06 dated 21st November 2005, with the Addl. Registrar of Societies office Rayagada. Earlier it’s registered office was at Suri G.P in a rented room but its administrative office at Therubali, as the Suri office lacks communication facilities like telephone and other electronic communication media and was difficult to approach villages. Now we have shifted to our own one room office at Maudiguda village under SURI, GP of   Kolnara block this year. A local resident donated the land and community helped for construction of the office cum medical first aid center.
